Browser question - Blinding white-space

I’m an oldster using MINT on a 24" screen. This page is so bright, my parrot turns to face the wall !

Is there a browser setting (maybe, somewhere) that ‘tones’ it down ?
I remember a “color-thermometer” add-on to mogorilla, back on winders95.

Hi @UncleTom Thanks for your question.

I’m gonna pass this to @Leenie as she will know this one off by heart!

I’ve already tagged her so she will see this. Bear with us!

In the meantime @UncleTom … in terminal…

ls /sys/class/backlight/

Step 2: Fix brightness control issue with Intel card in Ubuntu and Linux Mint:

Open a terminal and create the following configuration file, if it does not exist:

sudo touch /usr/share/X11/xorg.conf.d/20-intel.conf

Now we need to edit this file. You can use any editor be it a terminal one or graphical.

sudo gedit /usr/share/X11/xorg.conf.d/20-intel.conf

Add the following lines to this file:

Section "Device"
        Identifier "card0"
        Driver "intel"
        Option "Backlight" "intel_backlight"
        BusID "PCI:0:2:0"

Save it. Log out and log in back. The brightness control should be working through function keys now:

Worth a try in case it works for the moment whilst waiting for Leenie. Let me know if it helped.

If it works but doesnt remember the brightness… back to terminal

sudo add-apt-repository ppa:nrbrtx/sysvinit-backlight
sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get install sysvinit-backlight

Save, reboot and check

@iMac ~ $ ls /sys/class/backlight/
apple_backlight radeon_bl0

In the meantime… using the Vivaldi browser settings, I changed to a ‘dark’ mode.
I mis-understood, I assumed ‘dark’ meant dark-colors. No, it means darker-tones.
WOW!!! this forum uses at least four tones of white.

The bright white is now cloudy. (the parrot approves !)
The ‘quick rundown’ is light-gray-clouds. The scrollers are medium-gray.
Certain text is sky-blue. Normal text is charcoal. Header text is black.
The ‘created & last reply’ box and this text-entry box, are the only true-white on the page.

Also, this PC is actually an old iMAC, with the ‘profe$$ional’ tactile keyboard.
We don’t have a proper key-mapping for the 15 PF keys, or the 9 Edit keys, or the Calculator keys.
Thats a good project for me… beginning with your Step 2:
Thanks a mil, tell Leenie to take tomorrow off.

@UncleTom ah thats handy to know its a mac and radeon… thanks for the feedback!

I have been wondering about all the white on our forum pages. It’s very difficult to see. Passing this one off to @biff, and thank you @UncleTom for the day off.
